How does parental substance abuse affect child neglect?

Parental substance abuse significantly increases the risk of neglect because it can impair the caregiver’s ability to provide for a child's basic needs, including safety, nourishment, and emotional support. When a parent is dealing with addiction, their focus often shifts away from the child's well-being, leading to situations where children may be left unsupervised, exposed to unsafe environments, or experiencing a lack of emotional or physical care.

Substance abuse can also lead to a variety of behavioral and psychological issues in parents that further complicate their ability to effectively parent. This can contribute to instability in the home, neglect of personal hygiene or the child's needs, and even emotional withdrawal from the child.
